Clonburris, Dublin, Ireland

Introduction

In late 2007 SouthDublin County Council announced a plan to develop “Clonburris,” a new suburb located in Dublin, Ireland. This plan consisted of building 15,000 new homes all of which to be designed with the highest sustainable standards. “The plans for Clonburris include countless green innovations such as high levels of energy efficiency, mandatory renewable energy for heating and  electricity, the use of recycled and sustainable building materials, a district heating system for distributing heat, the provision of allotments for growing food, and even the banning of tumble driers, with natural drying areas being provided instead” –ConstructIreland

Reason to Be Selected

The area is part of the designated South County Dublin Development Plan that spans from 2004-2010.The total area covered by the proposed Clonburris Plan is 265 hectares (655Acres). The plan separates the area into 2 parts:§ The designated Strategic Development Zone 180hectares (444 Acres) covered by the proposed Planning Scheme§ The area covered by the proposed Local Area Plan 85hectares (210 Acres). One of the key ideas of the plan is to integrate the bio-diverse landscape of the surroundings into the urban landscape. A geographic focal point of the area is the GrandCanal which wraps around the cities limits. Around the canal are countless parks, paths, and scenic views. One part of the plan is to erect 10 new bridges over the canal to connect the environment to the city center with ease.

Transportation is also a big part of the proposed plan. When completed Clonburris will have aplethora of public spaces, shopping, housing and community designed spaces. The master plan tries to interlock the different groups of communities with easy public transportation. Part of this new transportation includes 2 new train stations (Transportation hubs) that interconnect with both light rail and heavy rail. Along with this, the integrated transportation hubs with be equipped with a metro system and underground “Dart” or high speed light rail. The plan also calls for new high tech time systems similar to Rutger's NextBus system which will tell you precise times of bus and train schedules as to maximize convenience and efficiency  When all is completed you will not have to walk more than 10 minutes to get anywhere in the city.
Sustainability is another important part of the Master Plan of Clonburris. One of the planner's main goals was to reduce the dependence on cars. Accessibility is key in this so planners created a central plaza equipped with a library, community spaces, and even a youth café.  Another goal was to cut costs by using sustainable alternatives such as: “the use of recycled and sustainable building materials, a district heating system for distributing heat, the provision of allotments for growing food, and even the banning of tumble driers, with natural drying areas being provided instead.” With these new improvements Clonburris will have40% less cost than modern homes and 80% less than Irelands average home. The project is currently under construction with some setbacks resulting from the current state of the Irish economy. It is set to be completed 10-15 from the projects start.
