Pixel Building-Australian Green Star Building

Introduction

The former Carlton & United Breweries Brewery is one of Melbourne's key areas with the most potential for development. Due to the importance of location, the development of this plot has undergone long-term discussions, and is now in the creative stage of diversified research and multi-party collaboration. Entrusted by Grocon Pty Ltd., Studio 505 is responsible for designing its development planning office building, the Pixel Building. This building is the last building in the planning and design concept of the base, but it is also the first one to be built. The Pixel Building is expected to meet two ultimate goals, namely to meet the highest expectations and the smallest amount of construction at the same time.

Reason to Be Selected

The Pixel Building covers an area of 250 square meters and a construction area of about 1,000 square meters. It aims to provide a six-star green standard, carbon-neutral building for the development team and sales staff, and provide a display area and green for the development and construction and sales of this area in the future. Landscape space. The term "carbon neutral" originated in the United Kingdom, which means that the energy generated by buildings in a year can be self-sufficient, and the remaining energy is fed back to the grid to balance the carbon emissions generated during construction.

Details

1 Green roof

The pixel building's roof is Australia's first water-saving garden, with more than 75% of the building's roof area covered by native Victorian grass species. This species was selected by experts from the University of Melbourne based on Victorian vegetation resources, and represents the dominant species in Melbourne's residential area. The roof steppe vegetation adds to the ecological diversity of Melbourne, and will attract once-prevalent wild animals (especially insects, birds and butterflies) to thrive here, while filtering rainwater and providing thermal insulation to the building.

2 Water Recycling System The following is the water recycling system:

The following is the name given to the term: The term is used to describe the following:The Pixel Building has an advanced water recycling system. Its design goal is that if Melbourne maintains an average level of rainfall over 10 years (1999-2009), the Pixel Building can achieve self-supply of water resources. From the original ecological green roof that can collect rainwater to the planted balcony on the building's facade, the pixel building is not only a concept of sustainable design, but a laboratory covered by a symbiotic system, including the most obvious elements- Pixel epidermis. In Australia, the Pixel Building will, for the first time, recycle grey water using a unique reed-based system that can also be used as window shading. Since the main source of water is rainwater, only a very small amount of drinking water is required in the building. Each drop of rain dripping into the pixel building is reused 3 times.

3 Building skins

The unique and colorful “pixel” skins of the Pixel Building are impressive. They are a comprehensive system composed of planted vegetation, sunblinds, double glass curtain walls and solar shading. The system developed by 505 Studio is complex in structure but concise in appearance. According to different architectural functions, ESD requirements and materials, the facade texture presents different visual feelings at the human scale, and has a sense of flow and consistency. "Pixels" provide natural daylight while filtering sunlight. These colored wings are fixed on the skin (can't rotate) and have 3 functions: firstly give the building a unique visual effect; secondly, it acts as a sunshade and louver system in the summer to reduce the load of the air-conditioning system; Lighting adjustment. The designed blades allow 100% of natural light to enter the office area while avoiding the effects of glare. Therefore, the indoor light is very mild, no shading shutters need to be set on the main windows, and laptops can be used in all areas.

4 Typical office floors

4.1 Floor cooling and heating system

Compared with traditional commercial office buildings, the main difference between pixel buildings is the building floor structure that provides the main source of indoor cooling. These structural slabs contain cold water pipes, which are filled with cold water from the central refrigeration equipment. The concrete slabs on the floors are exposed in the office space, so the cold water pipe floor can continuously provide the indoor source of cooling. In order to take full advantage of the cooling effect at night, the façades on the west and north sides of the building are equipped with openable windows. Windows can be turned on by the building's intelligent control system during non-office hours or when the outdoor air is relatively low. The entrance of outdoor air can reduce the indoor temperature, and at the same time, the concrete floor will be cooled and function the next day, which can reduce the load of the cold water system.

4.2 Lighting systemIn

order to make the office space have 100% natural daylight, the pixel building tried to abandon the traditional louver design method and introduce the design technology of double wall. Through advanced 3D computer-aided design simulation, the external shading system can exert its maximum efficiency, and the large amount of natural lighting in the indoor space prevents the office with large windows from becoming a greenhouse. The electric light source can be controlled by a dimming system. When the natural light in the room meets a comfortable working environment, the lighting system will gradually turn off. The lamps and lanterns use efficient T5 single-tube fluorescent tubes to make the light distribution meet the illumination requirements.

505 Studio sought to find a way to harmonize the pixel building with the low natural environment of the northern part of the brewery. By controlling the scale of the building, the shading system and the skin pattern, the pixel building is designed to reflect the possibility of the area becoming a vast city in the future.

The Pixel Building achieved a score of 105 in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) evaluation in the United States, becoming the highest-scoring building in the LEED evaluation system in the world. In addition, the building is also trying to surpass the highest score in the British BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) evaluation system. The Pixel Building will strive to be a model for future office buildings.
