Guangzhou's most beautiful old street due to rich and varied cultural relics, however losing its identity and traditions under rapid urbanisation of China.

Introduction

Enning Road is located in the heart of Guangzhou's Xiguan Old Town. It has a very special significance for Guangzhou. It is called “Guangzhou's most beautiful old street” because of its neat and continually Qilou buildings, rich and varied cultural relics, and the preserved old city life style. However, it has become a comprehensive sample of the development of China's old city because of its rough experience in recent years. The design sees the urban area as an organically growing living organism, using adaptive and gradual transformation methods. When it comes to transformation, it is not specific, and it is not necessary to cover the diversity of the city with the personal taste of the designer.
Renaissance of Old City Life

Highlights:

The design takes the diverse balance between traditional style and contemporary community spirit into account. The protection and renovation of historical blocks is not completely old-fashioned, but organic renewal is advocated.

Details

When it comes to historical blocks, many people’s first reaction is to “protect” and “repair old as old”. In fact, the situation in the old city is very chaotic, the buildings are mixed, the buildings with high value are very old, and there are many new buildings in recent years. There are also privately built structures, long-term vacant houses, and the property rights are also compared. Complex, the mentality of the residents is different, and can not be treated with “reservation” or “repair”. Some streets that are unified and rectified according to historical features seem to be original, but because of the single format, the housing pattern can not attract modern commercial office use, and the door is cold, only the street has no life, and it has become a “set of street”. The plan should face the marginalization of the old city, inject new vitality. into the industrial format and the content of life, and stimulate this new vitality in design.
Combined with the opinions of the “micro-reconstruction” of Guangzhou urban renewal, the design scheme adopts the method of “organic renewal”. The design team emphasized that the Yongqing area is not an unconditional retro “repair”, but an “update” that is future-oriented. The reconstructed Yongqing area is a diversified product that balances traditional style with contemporary community spirit. At the beginning of the design work, the design team ranked all the sixty building units in a row and examined them one by one. They rated the location of the block in the block, the architectural style, the integrity of the facade, the structural condition, etc., and finally gave the original Repairs, "facade renovation", "structural redo", "demolition and reconstruction", "completely new" treatment recommendations, and repeated discussions with developers.
After the renovation, the entire block not only maintains the wisdom of the original planning and construction, but also integrates the individuality of each individual building. It is a real “micro-reform”.

Conclusions

The protection of historical blocks not only emphasizes the integrity of the overall style, but also highlights the individualized design and management of important nodes and buildings. The transformation of historical blocks not only protects the traditional style, but also takes the modern life and future development of the community into account.
