Introduction

In terms of urban design, the influence of bicycles on urban design is everywhere in Netherlands. Taking a square in the center of Rotterdam as an example, due to the difference with the surroundings, pedestrians have to go up the steps, so the designer plans bridges for bicycle so that it can be ridden directly from the road to the square.

Details

The parking and cycling space of bicycle not only serves its own function, but also stimulates the creativity of the city. The ubiquitous urban design considering bicycle traffic makes cycling more comfortable, creating more interesting space and experience. These space become an effective micro unit to stimulate urban vitality.

1) Traffic node design

The sign of triangle near the intersection means priority in Netherlands. If the dip angle of the triangle is consistent with your direction, then you are allowed to past first. If you face with the apex angle of the triangle, you should let others go first. In many cases, this triangle gives priority to the bicycle.

2) Eindhoven Central Plaza

The square in central Eindhoven has a very edgy arch entrance slanting into the ground, which is actually an underground bicycle parking lot. There are escalators for the bicycle to up and down. The underground is a spacious and bright space. The center of the underground space is a glass box that preserves the remains of Eindhoven hundreds of years ago. This design not only solves the problem of bicycle parking in the square, but also protects the historical relics and itself becomes a special landmark of the city square as well.

3) Roningen station square

Instead of solving the parking problem by building separate parking buildings or parking plazas, the designers place the parking lot in a sunken space and cover it with a square. The rising and falling space creates different functions, which can be easily reached from the square above to the parking lot below. The hole in the square also provides the parking lot with natural light. The ground of the square also has special light effect at night, which attracts many people to rest and relax in the square. The utilization rate is very high from morning to night, bringing a new image to the city.

Conclusions

Bicycle is leading the low-carbon transport. But to achieve the best effect it must be combined with perfect, targeted urban design space and this will help create new value for space and social life. Due to the characteristics of its small volume and the flexible using requirements of space, the urban design for bicycle paking and riding becomes the most effective micro unit to stimulate creativity in the the city.Small space can also change the image of the city.
