Introduction

“The Lower Rainier Vista project on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle creates the framework for one of the most spectacular views in the Pacific Northwest. The design lowered a road that disrupted the viewshed and created a land bridge over it that covers a multimodal transportation hub. By regrading, reconfiguring, and reimagining its vast lawns, this project has repaired the visual connection between the campus and Mount Rainier first conceived by the Olmsted Brothers in 1909.”

Reason to Be Selected

The Lower Rainier Vista project helps strengthen connectivity of new light rail hub with bus, bicycle and walking routes to campus, by creating a new land bridge facilitates ,which aims to establish multi-modal transportation connections.

Details

The design team took “restoring Vesta axis” as the design goal and systematically arranged various types of complex spaces and policy priorities in order to re-establish Vesta ’s original magnificent landscape and experience while serving New links for pedestrians, light rail, buses, cyclists and cars that combine multiple modern facilities.
Rainier Vista ’s axis extends above the main bus route with the help of a land bridge, forming a solid presence in the southern part of the campus, enabling a smooth land bridge walking experience. The design team created a "front porch" leading to the university, connecting the Vista with the surrounding environment through paths and small squares for venues for meetings, leisure and events. The design team plans the distribution of local plants to ensure future ecological continuity.

Conclusions

The Lower Rainier Vista Project is a collaboration between the University of Washington, the Washington State Department of Transportation, Sound Transit, King County Metro Transit, and the Seattle Department of Transportation to establish an important campus axis , Serving pedestrians, cyclists, buses and cars, and establishing a multimodal transportation connection between the newly constructed Husky Stadium Light Rail Station, the University of Washington Medical Center Station and the campus center.
