Introduction

The ‘Tōkyō-to’ has 621 square kilometers, and the residence is far away from the core office area. So the railway is not only traffic, but also characteristic culture. In Tokyo, Akihabara, a century old ‘Bansei Bridge Station’, has been transformed into a 2000 square meters tidal gathering place during the yu kanda station reconstruction project and has become a popular place of interest.

Reason to Be Selected

Built in 1912, the station used to be a hub connecting the East and west of the city. But from 1943, the train stopped stopping; from 1936-2006 years, it was used as a Transportation Museum; later, the government demolished the building, only the piers were retained, and become the scars of the city. After the reconstruction, the train track on the building is still used as the trunk line of Tokyo railway. The staircase which once be used as an indoor entrance to the train platform is now leading to an upper level Cafe between two train tracks. Its glass curtain wall and outdoor terrace not only create a dynamic space, but also enjoy the surrounding environment.

Systematic planning

Stealth addition

Delicate alcove

100-year ideal

Details

Systematic planning: JR East Japan has positioned it as a small community planning, not just a historical building renovation. The transformation is divided into several parts: including the JR Bansei Bridge Station building, the old bridge structure renovation, the 2 storey prospect platform construction, the 1 storey roof landscape, the space development under the bridge, and the square design.

Stealth addition:

The north side of the project is next to the Kanda River, and the river resources are utilized. The end of the trail are expanded into half outdoor space to accommodate more people.

The south side has a distance from the building to form an introverted commercial street, so that creates an outward swing area to facilitate temporary events.

Using concrete and brick in comparison with old and new ones, concrete is only used for structural reinforcement.

Delicate alcove: There are many alcove at the old station, which is reopened this time. When these concave rooms are opened, the store can be linked to form the inner loop. The arch is decorated with fair faced concrete. After many years, the platform staircase is reopened, led by light strips, pointing to a roof. A large screen is also arranged on the wall of the corridor, which tells the history of the building.

100-year ideal: MIKAN also looks forward to the ideal of the next 100 years: to form a large public space with rich activities through different elevations.

Conclusions

In the softest way, old buildings are brought back to life. This is the power of design to change the city. The mAAch-ecute Project Company has Positioned the project as a small community planning, not just as historical buildings repair, which has given the 100-year old station a whole new life. The Design team MIKAN Architects used the simplest way to finish the project and the project won the best design of 2014 Good Design Award in Japan, and was selected for the classification of "design for the future".
