Zhao Zichen   Mar 30.2020
Studio Outside developed an a master plan for bernheim arboretum and research forest within a focus on strengthening the impact of Bernheim’s mission and to further their strategic plan while ensuring financial sustainability.

Introduction

“Since 1929, the privately owned Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has been one of Kentucky’s most popular natural treasures. This creative master plan builds on the Bernheim’s history and the original Olmsted Brothers concept, to help its 15,000 acres tell a fresh story that fulfills its long-standing mission of connecting people to nature. Led by the landscape architect, an interdisciplinary team has developed a plan that includes new and repurposed facilities, expanded and reinterpreted tree collections, walking trails, and green infrastructure practices that reinforce the “story of water” that is a central message of both the forest and its relevance in a changing world.”

Details

The Bernheim Botanical Garden and Research Woodland are located 30 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky. Originally planned by the Olmsted brothers in 1929, the design goal was to restore the landscape damaged by the iron ore industry. Nearly 100 years after the establishment of the Bernheim Botanical Garden, perfect its strategic planning and formulate a new master plan, so that the mission of "connecting people and nature" can be continued.
The master plan of the Bernheim Botanical Garden and Research Woodland recounts and presents the history of the site, creating a colorful natural environment and carefully laid out the garden landscape. Through the design of new functional areas and facilities, the ecosystem has been improved. It also injects a new connotation that is closely connected with the current era.
The new Bernheim Botanical Garden emphasizes the awareness and mission of ecological protection, and provides tourists with a comfortable and rich level of excursion and leisure experience. In addition, the improved functional space and infrastructure make the tour experience more intuitive, strengthen the connection between staff and tourists, and reduce the damage to the ecological environment through the reuse of existing buildings. The design team solved the disconnection between the original woodland stream restoration and the botanical garden waterway management by "telling the story of water".

Conclusions

The master plan helps strengthen Land management and habitat restoration, by improving ecological systems and interpreting a layered landscape story for a new generation ,creating a place for people immersing in the colorful natural environment and meticulously arranged garden landscape which aims to inherit the mission of "connecting man and nature".
