Introduction
The main Building, the former Oswald Berliner Brewery has been a part of the Berlin Wall, the 3rd floors windows served as a GDR outlook over the wall. After 1990, the complex has been home to a kowloon-walled-city esque agglomeration of small businesses, housing and storage facilities, in the basement we found the party dungeon of the Nigerian ambassador in the GDR.
The Brewery Building consists of different building parts, built between the late 19th and early 20th century. The additions of a new 4th and 5th floor had to carefully respond to the distinct structural and spatial properties of the old building parts. Thus the design process for the two top floors can be best described as a cat lying down on a rugged stone wall, shifting and turning until it finds a position that is suitably comfortable for an afternoon nap. The resulting topography was used to form a village-like arrangement of white volumes, home to a cluster of smaller start-ups, which gather around a central outdoor plaza on the 5th floor. For the old building parts, our aim was to recreate the pre WWI appearance as we imagined it, since hardly any photos or plans had survived to this day. A tricky feature regarding German climate protection laws was the unlading of the brick facade. The entire circulation and spatial logic, however, have been redefined to match the requirements of a 21st century startup landscape. In Soundclouds floors for example, formerly separated building parts and floorlevels have been connected through a series of open internal staircases, in order to create a continuous spatial system. The ground floor, hosting coworking spaces and a restaurant run by star chef tim raue, is largely opened to the campus' courtyards, gardens and terraces, as well to the event spaces in the basement. The buildings basement, consisting of distinct spaces ranging from 400m² halls to radial oil tank rooms has been party excavated, to allow indoor-outdoor event circulation.
